Bread of Life

Bible Commentries and Notes.

YAHWEH gave the Children of Israel in the wilderness bread from heaven and water from the rock to satisfy their hunger and thirst.
Messiah gave his flesh and blood – “spiritual meat” and “spiritual drink” to satisfy our spiritual hunger and thirst.

Just like Western society today, the first-century Jews were blind to spiritual realities. They wanted a Saviour to solve material problems like hunger and poverty, but they did not want a Saviour to deliver them from their sins. The Messiah said as much: ‘you seek me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled’ (John 6:26). It’s the same today. People will accept Yahshua Messiah as a good example, but not as the Son of YAHWEH. People want Him to remedy their social and economic ills but will not come to Him for the forgiveness of their sins. To such people the Messiah issued a solemn warning: ‘do not labour for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life’ (John 6:27). Many people, governments and subcultures today are working hard to make the best of their physical life, but the Master Yahshua reminds us to put all our efforts into finding out who He is and how to get saved. The Messiah Yahshua urges us to prioritise the eternal over the temporal, to think of heaven, not earth, and to value everlasting life, not physical life.

We His children, must eat His flesh and drink His blood in order to gain eternal life. This is not a literal statement but a metaphor for faith in the Messiah Yahshua.Faith is not empty intellectualism or mere sentimentality but complete dependence on Yahshua Messiah. It is appropriating to yourself His work on the cross. Just as we take food into our being and depend entirely on it for physical life, so we need to take the Messiah to ourselves and be united to Him in order to be saved. The metaphor of eating His flesh and drinking His blood is a vivid illustration of what faith is – complete dependence on Him, resting in Messiah alone. He is the I AM, the bread of life.  To reject Him is to die eternally, whereas to believe Him is to live eternally – which will it be?

note ~ By faith we are baptized into his death and resurrection (covenant agreement), by obedience to YAHWEH we keep the appointed times and par-take of the annual Passover (once baptized in Messiah's name only) established with the symbols of bread and wine as Messiah stated as memorial of Him.

The Scriptures
Bread Out of Heaven

Exo 16:4 And YAHWEH said to Moses, Behold, I AM will rain bread from the heavens for you.
And the people shall go out and gather the matter of a day in its day, so that I may test them, whether they will walk in My Torah or not.

Psa 78:24 and He rained on them manna to eat; yea, He gave the grain of the heavens to them.
Psa 78:25 Man ate the bread of the mighty; He sent them food to the full.†

~ Psalms 78:25 Verses 24-25- Some translations put “man ate the food of angels”, but the Hebrew word “abiyr” means mighty ones and the verses are simply stating the manner was not normal food but food coming directly from heavenly intervention.

I AM the Bread of Life
Joh 6:31 Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, as it is written "He gave them bread out of Heaven to eat." °
Joh 6:32 Then Yahshua said to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, Moses has not given you the bread out of Heaven, but My Father gives you the true bread out of Heaven.
Joh 6:33 For His bread, that of Elohim, is He who has come down from heaven and gives life to the world.
Joh 6:34 Then they said to Him, Master, always give us this bread.
Joh 6:35 Yahshua said to them, I AM the Bread of life; the one coming to Me will not at all hunger, and the one believing into Me will not thirst, never!
Joh 6:47 Truly, truly, I say to you, The one believing into Me has everlasting life.
Joh 6:48 I AM the Bread of life†.
Joh 6:49 Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness and died.
Joh 6:50 This is the Bread coming down out of Heaven that anyone may eat of it and not die.
Joh 6:51 I AM the Living Bread that came down from Heaven. If anyone eats of this Bread, he will live forever. And indeed the bread which I will give is My flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.

~ John 6:48 Yahshua is the I AM. He was also born in Beth/lechem meaning “House of bread”.

Except you eat ...
Joh 6:53-58 Then Yahshua said to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, Except you eat the flesh of the Son of Man, and drink His blood,
you do not have life in yourselves†.
The one partaking of My flesh and drinking of My blood has everlasting life, and I will raise him up at the last day.
For My body is truly food, and My blood is truly drink.
He who eats my body and drinks my blood abides in me and I in him.
Even as the living Father sent Me, and I live through the Father; also the one partaking Me, even that one will live through Me.
This is the Bread which came down out of Heaven, not as your fathers ate the manna and died; the one partaking of this Bread will live forever.

~ John 6:53 Taking the Passover symbols of the bread and the wine once a year on Passover is required to continue on covenant relationship. Exo 13:10, Luk 22:19-20

Albert Barnes John 6:55 Is meat indeed - Is truly food. My doctrine is truly that which will give life to the soul.

Exo 13:10 And you shall keep this ordinance at its appointed time, from year to year.†

~ Exodus 13:10 The appointed time to keep the Passover is on the 14th day of the first month Aviv, according to the biblical calendar. There is no biblical precedent for taking the Passover symbols of the bread and wine weekly, or monthly, that came into practice by Catholicism almost a hundred yrs after the resurrection of Yahshua by a Catholic bishop, but the instruction by Yahshua was to celebrate His death once a year on the 14 of Aviv, 1Cor 11:23-26, Luk 22:19-20.

Luke 22:19-20 And He took bread and gave thanks and broke it and gave it to them and said,
This is My body, which for your sake is given. Do this for My memorial.
And in like manner the cup, after having supped, saying,
This cup is the New Covenant in My blood, which is being shed for your sakes.
