Genesis 1:2 ~ The Ruin And Confusion Of YAHWEH’s Creation?
~ scriptures are from the Hebraic Roots Bible, and HBR Bible Notes in italics.
Bible Commentries and Notes.
Does Genesis 1:2 describe the Ruin And Confusion Of YAHWEH’s Creation before the world was formed?
Gen 1:2 and the earth being without form and empty, and darkness on the face of the deep, ....
YAHWEH did not create the world in a state of confusion. Between verses one and two, did some terrible catastrophe take place?
Looking at the meanings of the Hebrew words it 'suggests' that something did happen.
The word “was H1961” in verse 2 really should be translated “became”. Gen 1:2 and the earth being H1961....
Strong’s Concordance
H1961 - Was / being
הָיָה -
hâyâh -
haw-yaw'
A primitive root (compare H1933); to exist, that is, be or become, come to pass (always emphatic, and not a mere copula or auxiliary): - beacon, X altogether, be (-come, accomplished, committed, like), break, cause, come (to pass), continue, do, faint, fall, + follow, happen, X have, last, pertain, quit (one-) self, require, X use.
Total KJV occurrences: 3502
The only thing clearly presented is the fact that something happened by which the earth “became" without form H8414 and void H922.
Whatever the catastrophe was, it left the earth “without form and void,” a desolate, uninhabitable, ruined mass of confusion.
Strong’s Concordance H8414 - without form
תֹּהוּ -
tôhû -
to'-hoo
From an unused root meaning to lie waste; a desolation (of surface), that is, desert; figuratively a worthless thing; adverbially in vain:
- , (thing of) nought, vain, vanity, waste, wilderness.
Total KJV occurrences: 20
Strong’s Concordance H922 - void
בֹּהוּ -
bôhû -
bo'-hoo
From an unused root (meaning to be empty); a vacuity, that is, (superficially) an undistinguishable ruin:
- emptiness, void.
Total KJV occurrences: 3
Gen 1:2 and the earth being without form and empty, and darkness H2822 on the face of the deep H8415, ....
Strong’s Concordance H2822 - darkness
חֹשֶׁךְ -
chôshek -
kho-shek'
From H2821; the dark; hence (literally) darkness; figuratively misery, destruction, death, ignorance, sorrow, wickedness:
- dark (-ness), night, obscurity.
Total KJV occurrences: 79
Strong’s Concordance H8415 - deep
תְּהֹם תְּהוֹם -
tehôm tehôm -
teh-home', teh-home'
(Usually feminine) from H1949; an abyss (as a surging mass of water), especially the deep (the main sea or the subterranean water supply):
- deep (place), depth.
Total KJV occurrences: 36
Putting this together to expanding the meanings of these words in Genesis 1:2:
Gen 1:2 and the earth became a "confusion, empty place, without form, nothing, a desolation, a worthless thing"
and "an undistinguishable ruin" and darkness, misery, destruction, on the face of the abyss.
Is this "catastrophe" the result of the "fall of Satan"?
~ or is it simply the description the potter's clay, yet to be placed on the potter's wheel, yet to be formed .....

Looking at the last part of Genesis 1:2 .... and the Spirit (Ruwach in Hebrew) of Elohim moving gently on the face of the waters,
New American Bible (1970)
2 the earth was a formless wasteland, and darkness covered the abyss, while a mighty wind swept over the waters.
Hebrew and Greek "Word" meanings for 'Mighty Wind ~ Spirit' expanded in this article Spirit ~ Ruwach ~ Pneuma.
Ancient / Paleo Hebrew "Each Letter" Meanings of "Spirit ~ רוּחַ ~ Ruwach"
- RESH
means Master, Leadrer, Highest One, Authority, First
- VAV
means to fasten, to secure, to hold together
- CHET
means to be separate, to be protected, to cut off, and can mean sanctuary
therefore :
SPIRIT means the Highest one's Secure Protection. |

Combining this together with the expanded the meanings of these words in Genesis 1:2:
Gen 1:2 and the earth became a "confusion, empty place, without form, nothing, a desolation, a worthless thing"
and "an undistinguishable ruin" and "darkness, misery, destruction", on the face of the abyss.
~ while His Breath, His Spirit, the Highest one's Secure Protection, swept over the waters ... and creation began.
the Highest one's Secure Protection : His Covenant of the Laws of Nature ~ Edenic Covenant. (Elohim's promise in creation)
Regarding the "catastrophe", that it was the result of "the fall of Satan", the Scriptures do not explicitly state.
This article is more an expression of thought, with the expansion of the words and their meanings,
however from this expansion of Genesis 1:2 of destruction and desolation to the beginning of creation at the conclusion of the verse, we can clearly see that no matter what, as A. W. Pink wrote…
“Out of the chaos was brought the `cosmos,’ which signifies order, arrangement, beauty. Out of the waters emerged the earth.
A scene of desolation, darkness, and death, was transformed into one of light, life, and fertility, so that at the end all was pronounced, `very good.’”

Was this "catastrophe" the fall of Satan?
Was this the result of "the shock wave of sin" through the universe, the cause of this "catastrophe", because of Satan's rebellion in Heaven, at the very foundation of creation?
The Scriptures do not specifically tell us that this was the time of Satan’s fall; just that He did.
Isaiah 14:12-17 Oh Lucifer, son of the morning, how you have fallen from the heavens! You weakening the nations, you are cut down to the ground.
For you have said In your heart, I will go up to the heavens; I will raise my throne above the stars of El, and I will sit in the mountain of appointment, in the sides of the north.
I will rise over the heights of the clouds; I will be compared to Elyone (The Most High).
Yet you shall go down to Sheol, to the sides of the Pit.
They that see you shall stare and closely watch you, saying, Is this the man who made the earth tremble, shaking kingdoms,
making the world like a wilderness, and who tore down its cities; he did not open a house for his prisoners?
Ezekiel 28:14-18 You were the cherub that protected with your outstretched wings and I had put you in the holy Mountain of Elohim, where you were. You walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.
You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created, until iniquity was found in you.
By the multitude of your trade, they filled your midst with violence, and you sinned. So I cast you profaned from the mountain of Elohim, and I destroyed you, O covering cherub, from among the stones of fire.
Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty; you corrupted your wisdom because of your splendor. I have cast you to the earth. I will put you before kings, that they may see you.
By the host of your iniquities, by the iniquity of your trade, you have defiled your holy places. So I brought a fire from your midst and it shall devour you, and I will give you for ashes on the earth in the sight of all who see you.

We read in Exodus 20:11 For in six days YAHWEH made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all which is in them,
and He rested on the seventh day; on account of this YAHWEH blessed the Sabbath day and sanctified it. ”
Exodus 20:11 places the creation of Lucifer within the creation week, only if it is assumed that the expression "heaven" (or "heavens") refers not only to the first and second heavens, but to the third heaven as well.
A comparison between Exodus 20:11 and another verse on creation found in Nehemiah 9:6 is helpful.
The Nehemiah passage definitely refers to the creation of angels. Notice the expressions that are used:
Neh 9:6 All life comes from you, O YAHWEH; You are He, who has made the heavens, and Heaven of the heavens,
and all their host; the earth and all which is on it; the seas, and all that is in them; and You preserve all of them alive.
And the host of the heavens bows down to You.
The expression "heaven of heavens" is found in the following passages:
Deuteronomy 10:14; 1 Kings 8:27; 2 Chronicles 2:6; 6:18; Psalm 68:33, Psalm 148:4.
In each of these passages the phrase clearly refers to the third heaven, "the highest of all heavens."
Notice also that Psalm 148:1-4 is another passage (like Nehemiah 9:6) which mentions the angels (v.2)
and in the same context mentions the highest of all heavens (v.4).
Psa 148:1 HalleluYah! Praise (Aleph/Tav) YAHWEH from the heavens; praise Him in the heights.
Psa 148:2 Praise Him, all His angels; praise Him, all His hosts.
Psa 148:3 Praise Him, sun and moon; praise Him, all you stars of light.
Psa 148:4 Praise Him, O heavens of heavens; and O waters that are above the heavens.
Exodus 20:11 does not mention the heaven of heavens and Genesis chapter one does not mention the heaven of heavens either.
Neither of these passages mention angels.
Could it be that Exodus 20:11 and Genesis 1 refer only to the first and second heavens and not to the third heaven?
And if so, is this an indication that the third heaven with all its host had already been created prior to the six days of creation?
In the passages which do clearly mention the third heaven and the creation of angels (Colossians 1:16 and Nehemiah 9:6), nothing is said concerning the time frame of creation. The main point being stressed in these verses is that He is the Creator of all things.
Col 1:16 For all things were created through Him, the things in the heavens, and the things on the earth, the visible and the invisible; whether imperial thrones, or dominions, or angelic orders, or authorities, all things were in His hand and have been created by Him.
And regarding Time
Psa 90:4 For a thousand years in Your eyes are as a day, yesterday, when it passes, and as a watch in the night.
2Peter 3:8 But let not this one thing be hidden from you, beloved, that one day with YAHWEH is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

Gen 1:2 and the earth being without form and empty, and darkness on the face of the deep,
and the Spirit of Elohim moving gently on the face of the waters,
Is this the description of the Fall of Satan and the Ruin And Confusion it caused at the foundation of creation? We can only but speculate.
Or is it simply the description of the potter's clay, yet to be placed on the potter's wheel, yet to be formed
by the Master Potter :
Our Creator, Saviour, High Priest, Protection and King ~ Messiah Yahshua YAHWEH.
